Town To Add Green Space, Expand Civic Square With Purchase Of Downtown Property
Wednesday January 05, 2022
The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is planning to create urban green space right in the heart of downtown Stouffville with the purchase of a property next to the historic clock tower.
The property, measuring 38' x 116', is located at 6343 Main Street, immediately east of the tower and Civic Square. It is currently zoned commercial; however, the Town has intention of removing the buildings to create a more pedestrian Square.
“This is a very unique opportunity that we couldn’t pass up,” said Stouffville Mayor Iain Lovatt. “Expanding urban parkland and green space in the heart of our downtown core is not an opportunity that comes up every day. We are very excited to see how Civic Square will be transformed with this addition”
Whitchurch-Stouffville Council approved the $1.089m purchase with a unanimous vote at a Council meeting this morning. The closing date is March 2, 2022.
The funds for the purchase are coming from the Town’s Parkland Trust, according to Lovatt.
“This purchase doesn’t cost taxpayers a cent,” Lovatt said. “All the funds are coming from the Town’s Parkland Trust which is funded solely by developers.”
Details of the redesign of Civic Square will be coming later this year.
