Burn Permit
Before you start any fire, it is important to know the rules and regulations of Open Air Burning. The setting of small fires are classified under two different types.
Open Air Burning
The primary purpose of an Open-Air Burning Permit is to allow you to have a fire on your property in order to clean up excess yard waste such as dry brush, wood products and natural organic material. This type of burning requires a permit.
Yearly Burn Permit (valid until December 31st)
In order to qualify for an Open-Air Burn Permit we must confirm that your property is not within restricted areas, being those areas currently developed within the Stouffville settlement area. If you meet the first requirement your property must also be a minimum of 1 acre in size to qualify for the permit.
In order to purchase the permit you must be the property owner and if you are not, you must provide our office with a letter of permission from the property owner.
It is important to read the Open Air Burning By-Law AND to obtain a Burning Permit BEFORE you begin burning.
You can buy a permit online, by clicking here. Please call our office at (905) 640-9595, Ext. 6229 with any inquiry.
Specialty Burn Permit (5-day Permit)
The Fire Chief may provide written relief to those who require to burn outside of schedule ‘A’ of the current by-law.
Specialty Burn Permits can only be obtained by completing the Oversized Burn Permit Request Form or contacting the Fire Department at 905 640-9595, ext 6229.
Before the permit can be issued, Fire Department staff will need to inspect the site.
Costs associated to such permit:
- $50 for the Permit (+ HST)
- $209 for Inspection (+ HST)
Recreational Fires
Recreational fires are fires that are set for recreational purposes using clean wood products, such as fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and chimineas. These types of fires are also regulated under the Open Air Burning By-Law. It is important to read this By-Law before you have this type of fire because certain conditions must be complied with.
A permit is NOT required for Recreational Fires but there are conditions that must be complied with. Please review the following conditions available on the Recreational Fire Conditions Form prior to burning.
