Sodium in Drinking Water
Through on-going regulatory water sampling, the Town has determined there are elevated sodium levels in the Stouffville Drinking Water System. In response to these levels and as required by York Region, the Town would like to advise all users of this system of these elevated levels. York Region has reported average sodium levels of 35 mg/l in the Stouffville System. The Drinking Water Quality Standards identify an exceedance when sodium is above 20 mg/l. York Region Community and Health Services provides the following Sodium Fact Sheet and advises users of the system that sodium levels are moderately elevated.
If you have any concerns regarding this matter, please contact the Public Works Department.
Sodium in the Ballantrae/Musselman's Lake Drinking Water System is reported at 9 mg/l, and does not exceed the Drinking Water Quality Standard.
Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change: Minister's Annual Report on Drinking Water
The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change Minister's Annual Report on Drinking Water includes an overview of Ontario's drinking water systems' performance, Provincial efforts to manage the impacts climate change may have on water resources, work to protect the Great Lakes and improve drinking water for First Nations.
Community Lead Testing Program
Ontario Regulation 170/03 requires all municipalities to test drinking water for lead content. The Ontario Drinking Water Standard for lead is 0.010 mg/L. Water with lead content below this concentration standard does not represent a health hazard.
As required by Ontario Regulation 170/03, the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville began testing residential water samples in December 2007. By spring of 2011, various locations throughout the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville were tested, targeting the older areas of Stouffville. These sample locations were on a volunteer basis.
All lead test results were below the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) Drinking Water Quality Standards for lead of 0.010 mg/L. As a result, in the Fall of 2011 the MOECC granted the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville regulatory relief from community lead sampling.
The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville continues to take the required lead samples annually. Should a resident suspect that their home has lead plumbing or that they are connected to a lead service line, they may contact the Customer Service Department.
