New Public Mural Coming to Downtown Stouffville
Something vibrant is taking root in the heart of our town - a new mural is in progress in Downtown Stouffville!
The Mural: The mural celebrates Stouffville’s deep roots, diverse cultures, and shared future. At its center, the Tree of Life symbolizes our connection to the land, to one another, and to all living beings. Through vibrant colour, universal symbols, and meaningful imagery, artist Colin Whitebread invites viewers to reflect on their community, local heritage, and what Stouffville means to them. The artwork is a joyful expression of unity and hope, a reminder that together, we grow.
About the Artist: Colin Whitebread is a lifelong artist based in Stouffville, as well as an educator and dedicated community builder. With over 40 years of experience teaching and practicing art, he holds degrees from the University of Toronto, the Toronto School of Theology, and an Art Specialist designation from OCAD.
He has taught at all levels of education, exhibited widely, chaired multiple studio tours, and sold over 500 original artworks. A passionate arts advocate, Colin currently serves on the boards of both the Latcham Art Centre and the Stouffville Library.
The Mural Process: Creating a mural is a journey, one that brings together preparation, creativity, and community spirit. Here’s the plan on how it will come to life:
- Priming the Wall: The surface is cleaned and coated with primer to ensure the mural will last for years to come.
- Doodle Grid: A light, doodle-style grid is applied to help transfer the design accurately to the large wall. This is a fun and creative step that is the foundation for the final image.
- Painting: Over several weeks, artist Colin will bring the design to life using vibrant colours and bold, symbolic imagery.
Mural Safety: Your safety and the artist’s safety are important to us. While the mural is being painted, please stay clear of any equipment, or marked work zones.
Road Closure Notice: To allow for safe mural work, Church Street (southbound from Main Street to Commercial Street) will be closed from May 28 to July 4, weather permitting. This closure allows for critical steps such as power washing, priming, and equipment use. Thank you for your patience as we work to enhance our downtown with this inspiring artwork.
