A built heritage property is a building, property or constructed remnant that adds to a community’s heritage and identity.

Recipients are considered in two categories: residential property and non-residential property (i.e. commercial, industrial, institutional, etc.). 

Properties are evaluated based on the following criteria:

1. Architectural significance: This criteria will look at the features of the building and property including craftsmanship, architectural features, and representation of architectural style and time period.
2. Context: This criteria will examine the property in relation to its area – is it notable compared to neighbours? It is a landmark in the community?
3. Historical value: This criteria will examine significant events and people associated with the property.
4. General condition and maintenance: Properties that are not properly maintained should not be nominated.

These criteria are generally drawn from the following policy documents:

• Province of Ontario's Eight Guiding Principles in the Conservation of Historic Properties
• Section 6.4.3 of the Town's Official Plan
• Ontario Regulation 9/06: Criteria for Determining Cultural Heritage Value or Interest
